Poinsett County, Arkansas was created in 1838 from Greene and St. Francis Counties and is located in the northeastern section of the state.
This county was named for Joel Robert Poinsett.

Mr. Poinsett was then the Secretary of War; he is said to have given his name to the Poinsettia flower and introduced its cultivation into the United States. Poinsett County is bounded on the north by Craighead Co., on the west by Jackson Co., and on the east by Mississippi Co., and on the south by Cross and Crittenden Counties. Its area is 762 square miles running north and south. Through the center is Crowley's Ridge and east and west of this highland are level fertile valleys and prairies where farming is carried on successfully.
